The predators matter as much as the pollinators. Xerces makes the point directly in a separate post: the insects that eat your pest insects also overwinter in leaf litter and stems. Ground beetles, spiders and parasitoid wasps all winter over in that layer, so a bagged-and-binned garden starts every spring with the pests present and the biological controls absent.
Two numbers are worth committing to memory. Illinois Extension puts roughly 70 percent of native bee species as ground-nesters, needing bare or lightly vegetated soil. Xerces puts about 30 percent as tunnel-nesters using dead wood, hollow stems and brush. Support both and you have covered nearly the whole native bee community, which is more than any drilled bee hotel will do.
Bumble bee queens are the most fragile piece. Xerces notes that mated queens burrow only an inch or two (2.5 to 5 cm) into the soil to hibernate. That is shallower than a fork tine, shallower than most people's idea of "turning over a bed." A single autumn dig-over through a border can end a colony that would have raised hundreds of workers next summer.
Why This Works: Building Soil From the Top Down
Leaf litter is not just habitat, it is how forest soil gets made. Deciduous leaves run around 2 percent nitrogen and are high in carbon, so they feed the fungal end of the decomposition community rather than the bacterial end. Leaving them in place is the domestic version of what happens under a woodland canopy every year, and it is the same mechanism at work in sheet mulching and in the wider soil food web.
Diseased and borer-infested material, and the list is shorter than you think. This is where a one-sided "leave everything" message falls apart, because extension plant pathologists are unambiguous about a handful of specific cases.

Notice the shape of that list: it is almost entirely annual vegetable beds plus two specific ornamentals. The perennial border, the shrubs, the leaves under the trees, none of it appears. Michigan State University Extension has run this long enough to have numbers. Their guidance is to start in October on slightly dewy mornings, raise the mower deck to its highest setting, and pass over the leaves once or twice, roughly weekly. Even a layer around 6 inches (15 cm) deep can be handled with repeated passes.
The payoff is real. UConn reports that mulching a 2-inch (5 cm) layer of leaves into the turf canopy across the fall returns approximately 150 pounds of nitrogen, 20 pounds of phosphorus and 65 pounds of potassium per acre, which works out to about 3.44 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. MSU adds that after three years of leaf mulching their turf researchers recorded close to a 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass, because leaf fragments close the bare gaps where weed seed germinates.

Illinois Extension suggests cutting stalks and bundling them in an out-of-the-way corner. Small carpenter, mason and leafcutter bees will use them there just as readily as in the border.
The "Wait Until 50°F" Rule Is Weaker Than It Sounds
The advice to delay spring cleanup until temperatures are consistently above 50°F (10°C) circulates widely, but it traces back to outreach posts rather than experimental work, and no extension trial we found establishes that threshold. Do not treat it as a hard number. The sound version of the same instinct is simpler: delay spring cleanup as long as you can tolerate, cut high rather than low, and never remove all stems in one season.
Healthy ones, yes. Dead stems and seedheads are overwintering habitat for pollinators and predatory insects, food for seed-eating birds, and structure that traps insulating snow. The exceptions are plants that had a documented disease or borer problem this season: tomatoes with early blight or Septoria, bearded iris with borer, squash with vine borer, roses with severe black spot. Clear those beds properly and leave the rest standing. Cutting the whole garden flush in October is the one option with no evidence behind it.
Later than feels comfortable, and partially rather than completely.
