That is thirty-two bags of soil, and at current prices you are looking at somewhere north of $350 before you have planted a single seed.
There is a cheaper way, and it also happens to build better soil. Filling a raised bed in layers, with coarse woody material at the base and your good growing mix concentrated where roots actually live, cuts the bought-in volume by roughly two thirds. Two things stand out. First, depth drives cost far more than footprint does: going from 12 to 18 inches on the same 4 by 8 frame adds 50 percent to your material bill. Second, that 36 inch bed needs 96 cubic feet. Nobody should be buying 64 bags of soil.

All bagged is the default most people fall into. Why This Works: Stacking Functions
The woody core is not filler standing in for soil you could not afford. It is doing three jobs at once: storing water like a sponge through dry spells, feeding fungal networks that build long-term soil structure, and slowly releasing nutrients as it breaks down. In permaculture this is called stacking functions, and it is why a layered bed usually outperforms a bought-in one by year three.
The sequence below suits a bed 18 inches deep or more. If your bed is 12 inches or shallower, skip the wood core entirely: there is not enough depth to bury wood and still leave a proper rooting zone above it.
Line the base, if you have burrowing pests
Lay galvanised hardware cloth across the bottom before anything else and turn it up the sides a few inches. Quarter inch mesh stops voles and gophers. Skip this and you will find out the hard way. On a lawn or weedy site, a single layer of plain cardboard over the top of the mesh smothers grass and rots away within a season.
Build the wood core, 6 to 8 inches
Largest logs first, packed tightly to keep air gaps small, then branches and twigs to fill the voids. Aim for the wood to occupy roughly 30 to 40 percent of total bed volume. Soak it thoroughly before you cover it, because dry buried wood will pull moisture away from roots in the first season. Avoid black walnut, which releases juglone, and avoid anything pressure treated.
Add nitrogen-rich greens, 2 to 4 inches
Grass clippings, kitchen scraps, or well-rotted manure. This layer feeds the microbes that will colonise the wood and offsets the nitrogen they tie up while doing it.
Add rough carbon and part-finished compost, 4 to 6 inches
Shredded leaves, straw, or compost that is not quite ready. This is the buffer between the woody core and the growing layer, and it is where a lot of the bed's fertility will come from in years two and three.
Cap with finished growing mix, 8 to 12 inches
This is the layer that matters and the only one worth spending real money on. It should be a proper raised bed mix, not bagged garden soil. Firm it gently, water it in, and leave it a week to settle before planting if you can.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Do not put gravel, rocks or broken pots in the bottom "for drainage". It does the opposite. Water does not move freely from a fine-textured soil into a coarse layer beneath it, so it perches above the gravel and saturates the very root zone you were trying to protect. You also lose the volume. This myth is remarkably persistent and remains wrong.
Bagged "garden soil" and "potting mix" are not interchangeable, and neither is ideal on its own. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources makes the distinction plainly: potting mixes are built for containers and drain very fast, while garden soil is formulated to be dug into native ground, not to stand alone in a frame.
The ratio that extension services keep landing on is roughly thirds. UC ANR Master Gardeners recommend about one third mineral component, ideally a sandy loam or loamy sand, one third good quality finished compost, and the remainder aeration and organic matter. Why This Works: Building Soil in Place
A layered bed is a compost heap that you happen to be growing food on top of. Rather than importing finished soil and watching it deplete, you are running decomposition inside the bed, which is the same logic behind sheet mulching and chop and drop. The bed gets richer as it ages instead of poorer.
Four things come up again and again, and all four are counterproductive.
Gravel or rocks for drainage. Covered above. It creates a perched water table and wastes volume.
Landscape fabric between layers. It blocks the movement of soil life and roots between the layers you have just carefully built, and it clogs within a couple of seasons. Cardboard, which rots away, does the weed-suppression job without the long-term problem.
Fresh manure. Too much soluble nitrogen and salt, plus a food-safety issue on crops eaten raw. Compost it first, or apply in autumn for spring planting.
Unfinished compost in the top layer. Fine in the middle of the bed where it can carry on breaking down. In the growing layer it ties up nitrogen exactly where your seedlings need it.
A layered bed will drop noticeably. Expect the surface to fall by several inches over the first year as the woody core compacts and the organic layers break down, with the rate slowing through years two and three. This is normal and it is not a sign you did anything wrong.
Top up annually in autumn with an inch or two of finished compost, and let winter weather work it in. That is the whole maintenance routine. Wet it thoroughly as you lay it. Do not use it as a permanent liner or layer it several sheets thick, because it can then form a water-shedding mat.
Twelve inches of growing medium handles most annual vegetables, and 18 inches is comfortable for tomatoes, squash and root crops. Salad and herbs manage in 6 to 8 inches. Perennials such as asparagus, rhubarb and berry bushes want 18 to 24 inches. If the bed is bottomless and sits on decent unsealed soil, roots will grow beyond the frame, so a 12 inch bed on good ground performs better than the number suggests.
Because organic matter decomposes, which is the bed working as intended. Expect a noticeable drop in year one, especially with a woody core, slowing over the next two years. Top up each autumn with an inch or two of finished compost rather than trying to refill to the rim in one go.
