Why This Works: Never Walk on the Soil
The quiet advantage of a raised bed has nothing to do with height. It is that the frame permanently separates growing space from walking space. Soil structure is built by roots, fungi and worms creating air spaces, and a single footfall undoes a season of that work. What Size and Depth Should Your Raised Beds Be?

Width is about reach. Keep beds to about 4 feet (1.2 m) so you can work the middle from either side without standing in them. Against a wall or fence, halve that to 2 feet, because you only have one side.
Length is about convenience. Anything up to about 8 feet is fine. Longer and you will start walking around the end constantly, or worse, stepping over.
Depth is the decision that matters, because it is the only one you cannot revisit. Twelve inches of growing medium covers most annual vegetables. Perennials such as asparagus, rhubarb and berry bushes want 18 to 24 inches. Salad and herbs are happy in 6 to 8.
One nuance that changes the maths: if the bed is bottomless and sits on unsealed ground, roots grow past the frame into the soil below. A 12 inch bed on decent ground behaves like a much deeper one. A 12 inch bed on a patio does not.
What Should You Build Raised Beds From?
The three realistic options are metal, timber and masonry, and the honest ranking depends on how long you want the bed to last.
Coated steel has the longest service life by a wide margin and is effectively a one-time purchase. It warms faster in spring, which helps in cool regions and needs managing in hot ones. Timber looks better, is repairable one board at a time, and lets you build any size. It also rots, faster than most people expect, and the cedar you buy at retail is often sapwood rather than heartwood, which is far less durable than the species reputation implies. Masonry, meaning brick, block or stone, lasts indefinitely and costs the most in labour. Worth it for a permanent feature, overkill for a vegetable patch you might reorganise.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Buying on price per bed rather than depth. An 11 inch bed and a 24 inch bed look similar in a photograph and grow completely different things. The shallow one will never produce decent carrots, potatoes or perennials, and no amount of good soil fixes it. If budget is tight, buy one deep bed rather than two shallow ones.
How Do You Fill a Raised Bed Without Spending a Fortune?
This is where most of the money goes and where most of it is wasted. A 4 by 8 foot bed at 18 inches deep needs 48 cubic feet of material, which is around thirty-two bags of soil.
You do not need to buy all of it. Filling in layers, with coarse woody material at the base, rough compost above it and your good growing mix concentrated in the top 8 to 12 inches, cuts the bought-in volume by roughly two thirds. It also builds better soil, because the woody core stores water and feeds fungal networks as it breaks down.

How Do You Keep a Raised Bed Productive Year After Year?

The maintenance routine for a well-built bed is genuinely one job a year.
In autumn, add an inch or two of finished compost to the surface and leave it. Do not dig it in. Worms and rain will take it down, and digging destroys the structure you are trying to build.
