You water a zucchini in the evening. Next morning the whole plant is lying flat, leaves limp, soil still damp. At the base of the stem there is a small hole and a wet mound of what looks like orange sawdust.
That is Melittia cucurbitae, the squash vine borer, and by the time you see it the larva has already been eating the inside of your stem for two or three weeks. Which is the single most important thing to understand about this pest: every effective control happens before you can see any damage.
The good news is that its timing is predictable. One generation a year across most of the US, a narrow flight window, and extension degree-day models that tell you when. Get the calendar right and this is manageable. Get it wrong and you lose the plant.

Squash vine borer is a timing problem, not a spraying problem. Once the larva is inside the stem, almost nothing reaches it. Every reliable control (row covers, trap crops, egg removal, timed sprays, delayed planting) is aimed at the two-week window when adults are flying and laying eggs.
The adult does not look like a moth. University of Minnesota Extension describes it as about 1/2 inch long with an orange abdomen spotted black, metallic green forewings and clear hind wings. It flies in daylight, mimics a wasp, and buzzes audibly. Most gardeners have watched one work their squash patch and assumed it was a wasp.
Eggs are the part almost nobody looks for. Flat, brown, about 1/25 inch long, laid singly on the stem within a foot of the soil. Easy to rub off with a thumb, and doing so on a daily walk during flight season works.

If you do not want to track degree days, University of Kentucky Entomology recommends starting weekly monitoring at 950 degree days, which usually falls in mid-June. In practice: last week of June for most of the US, earlier in the South.
Both collapse a plant suddenly and the responses differ completely, so the distinction matters. Borer wilt has a physical signature: an entry hole near the soil line with moist greenish or orange frass spilling out. Cut the stem lengthwise and you find a cream grub with a brown head, up to an inch long, often more than one.
Bacterial wilt, spread by cucumber beetles, has no hole and no frass. The classic field test is to cut a wilted stem and slowly pull the two halves apart: if a sticky white thread stretches between them, it is bacterial wilt, and the plant cannot be saved. Grow a resistant species instead
Butternut and other Cucurbita moschata squash have solid, slender stems rather than the hollow ones borers exploit. UMN lists butternut, cucumbers, melons and watermelons as generally not attacked, and rates butternut as less susceptible than Hubbard and acorn. This is the only control that works while you are on holiday.
Row cover during the flight, with one hard exception
Cover when plants start to vine or at first adult sighting, and keep it on about two weeks past that. Two rules: remove it at flowering or you get no pollination, and never use it on ground that grew cucurbits last year, because the borers emerge from that soil and you have trapped them in with the crop.
Plant a second crop in early July
A summer squash sowing made in early July matures after the adults have finished laying. In a one-generation region this sidesteps the pest completely, and it costs you nothing but a packet of seed.
Monitor with a yellow bowl, then act
Set a yellow pan or bucket of water with a drop of dish soap beside the row by late June and check it daily. The moths are drawn to yellow and drown. It will not control the population, but it tells you the day the flight started, which is the information every other tactic depends on.
Stem surgery when you have already lost
Slit the stem upward from the frass hole with a sharp knife, find and kill the larvae, then mound moist soil over the wound and keep it watered. New roots often form above the damage. It works often enough to be worth ten minutes, and it is the only option once wilting starts.
Two Popular Fixes That Do Not Work
Bt is the big one. Bacillus thuringiensis has to be eaten to kill a caterpillar, and a larva sealed inside a stem never encounters a foliar spray. University of Minnesota Extension states this plainly: Bt is not effective against squash vine borer. It has a narrow use injected directly into a stem wound, but sprayed on leaves it does nothing. Epsom salt is the other: no extension service or entomology publication lists it as a control, and it will not cure a wilting plant.
Beneficial nematodes are the strongest biological. A 2016 PLoS ONE study found field applications of Steinernema riobrave and S. feltiae gave the same control as conventional insecticides. Maryland Extension also suggests injecting S. carpocapsae into the stem wound after surgery.
Spinosad is the useful organic contact option, but the honest version is that NC State notes organic products break down fast and need reapplying every three to five days for four to five weeks. That is fifteen or more applications. Most gardeners will not sustain it, and spinosad is toxic to bees when fresh, so it goes on late in the day, never on open flowers.
This is the one companion-planting tactic with real numbers behind it, and it is worth separating from the folklore.
The University of Connecticut IPM programme developed perimeter trap cropping: ring the main crop with Blue Hubbard squash, which both cucumber beetles and vine borer moths prefer, and defend the ring. Their result: cucumber beetle infestation on summer squash down by up to 95 percent and squash vine borer down by up to 88 percent.
Why This Works: Edge as a Filter
Permaculture treats the edge of a system as its most active and most useful zone. A perimeter trap crop turns that edge into a filter: pests arriving from outside meet a more attractive host first and stop there, so the interior stays clean without being sprayed. It is the same logic as a hedgerow or a border of insectary flowers, applied to a specific pest with a specific preference. Our guide to the full companion planting chart covers the wider pattern.
Three things determine whether it works. The ring must be unbroken, no gap wider than 15 ft. The perimeter rows have to be treated during adult flight, because an unsprayed trap crop concentrates the pest without killing it. And it scales down: UConn confirms it works in plots as small as 20 by 20 ft.
What about nasturtium, radish, buckwheat and tansy? No extension service or peer-reviewed source links any of them to reduced vine borer damage. They are worth growing for pollinators and predators, and our list of companion planting claims that do not hold up covers the wider pattern, but do not rely on them here.
The borers are in your soil right now, one to two inches down, in cocoons, waiting for next June. Three things reduce next year's population.
Pull and destroy infested vines the day a plant dies, not at season end. Larvae still feeding inside a collapsed vine will otherwise finish and drop into the soil. Do not compost them.
Rotate the planting. Cucurbits go somewhere else next year, ideally as far as your garden allows, and it should be far enough that a row cover is a viable option again.
Cultivate the old squash bed shallowly in fall or early spring, which exposes cocoons to weather and birds. This is the one place where the no-dig approach and pest management pull against each other, and it is a real trade-off rather than a solved question. Four tactics, none of which involve a spray. Grow butternut or another Cucurbita moschata with solid stems. Floating row cover from first vining until flowering, but only on ground that did not grow cucurbits last year. A second sowing of summer squash in early July that matures after the flight ends. And a daily walk during the flight window to rub eggs off the lower 12 in. of stem, which takes about two minutes per plant and removes them before they hatch.
Butternut and other Cucurbita moschata varieties, plus cucumbers, melons and watermelons, which the borer largely leaves alone. The mechanism is physical: moschata stems are solid and slender rather than thick and hollow, so a larva has nowhere to tunnel. The most susceptible are the C. pepo group, which is zucchini, yellow summer squash, acorn squash and most pumpkins, and Hubbard types. If borers destroy your crop two years running, switching species solves the problem more reliably than any treatment. Sometimes, if you act the morning you first see wilting. Slit the stem upward from the frass hole, remove every larva you find (there is often more than one), then mound moist soil over the cut and keep it watered. Squash readily produces adventitious roots from buried stem nodes, so the plant can re-root above the damage and carry on. Burying a few healthy vine nodes along the row before any trouble appears gives the plant a head start on that, which is a cheap piece of insurance in a bad year.
