Soil Blocking: How to Start Seeds Without Plastic Pots

What Is Soil Blocking?

Soil blocking means compressing a wet growing mix into free-standing cubes and sowing directly into them. No pot, no cell tray, no plastic. The mix is both the container and the growing medium, and the block holds its shape through its own structure and moisture.

The pitch you usually hear is air pruning: when a root reaches the edge of a block it meets air and stops, so the plant branches instead of circling, and transplants with almost no shock. That part is real and well documented by extension services.

What you rarely hear is the other half. A Michigan State trial found soil blocks made almost no difference to tomato yield or earliness. Both halves are worth knowing before you spend $40 on a tool, so this covers the method properly and then says honestly where the benefit does and does not show up.

The nesting is the part worth understanding. Swapping the pins on a larger blocker for inserts leaves a recess shaped to take the smaller block whole. A pepper germinates in a micro block on the heat mat, drops into a 2 in. block, and later into a 4 in. block, and its roots are never touched. That is the sequence a cell tray cannot copy.

Trays matter more than people expect, because you cannot water blocks from above. Anything rigid and flat that holds a shallow film of water works: cafeteria trays, boot trays, or mesh-bottom flats you dunk in a shallow container.

What Goes in the Mix?

Ordinary potting mix will not hold a block. It has no binding fibre, so it crumbles the moment you eject it. A blocking mix needs long peat or coir fibre to knit the cube together, screened fine enough to compress evenly.

Iowa State publishes two recipes. The classic one, by volume:

The binder. This is the ingredient doing the structural work, and it is why substituting a bagged seed mix fails.

The nutrition and the biology. Screen it, because a stick or a stone stops the blocker filling evenly.

The simpler version, if you want fewer ingredients: 2 parts peat or coir, 1 part compost, 1 part vermiculite or perlite. Our container mix recipes adapt easily to blocking by raising the fibre fraction.

For fertility, Iowa State gives two published rates: about 1/2 cup of a low-analysis all-purpose fertiliser such as 5-5-5 per cubic foot of mix, or equal parts blood meal, rock phosphate and greensand at 1.75 cups per cubic foot. A cubic foot is roughly a foot and a half of five-gallon buckets, so a batch goes a long way.

The moisture level is the whole skill

Start at 3 parts mix to 1 part warm water and adjust. The target consistency is described in extension guidance as wet concrete, peanut butter or brownie batter, which sounds far too wet and is correct. A squeezed handful should hold together firmly without dripping.

The failure modes are symmetrical and easy to read. Too dry and the block crumbles as it leaves the mould. Too wet and the mix sticks inside the blocker instead of releasing. If your first tray looks terrible, scrape it back into the tub and go again. It costs nothing but the two minutes.

Does Air Pruning Actually Do Anything?

Yes for root architecture, and the effect is well established beyond gardening. The nursery literature on containerised trees is unambiguous that standard plastic pots promote circling and girdling roots, that taxa with a prominent taproot suffer most, and that root-pruning containers produce more fine roots and less circling. One study on Acer rubrum found the root architecture set in the nursery container was still detectable five years after planting out.

So the mechanism is real. Now the part that gets left out.

Michigan State Extension trialled six indeterminate tomato varieties at Tollgate Farm, started either in 2.75 in. pots or in blocks from a Johnny's stand-up six-cell blocker, grown out in both field and hoophouse. The finding was that starting method had little effect on yield or earliness, and variety was by far the dominant factor.

That is not an argument against soil blocking. It is an argument for honest expectations. Better roots do not automatically become more tomatoes when everything else is done well. Choose the method for the plastic, the handling and the transplant quality. Choose your variety for the yield.

Why This Works: The Problem Is the Solution

A pot's job is to hold soil in, and the side effect is that it also holds roots in, spiralling them around a wall they cannot cross. Soil blocking removes the wall and lets the boundary itself become useful: the dry air at the block face is what tells the root to branch. Where Does It Go Wrong?

Iowa State is refreshingly direct about the downsides, and they are worth taking seriously before you commit a season to it.

Watering is genuinely different. Blocks have five exposed faces, so they dry far faster than a cell plug. Water from below only: pour a shallow film into the tray and let the blocks wick it up, or dunk a mesh flat briefly. Top watering breaks blocks apart. If they look shiny or start to slump, they are waterlogged.

Spacing is not optional. This is the step people skip. Leave a gap between blocks so the faces dry between waterings, because that dry air is what does the air pruning. Push them together and roots simply bridge into the next block, and you are prising fused cubes apart at transplanting.

Damping Off Likes Exactly These Conditions

Blocks need consistent moisture, and consistent moisture plus still air is what damping-off fungi want. Take the humidity dome off the moment seedlings emerge, not a week later. Run a small fan on low: it lowers humidity at the surface and thickens the stems at the same time. And keep the top millimetre of each block dry between waterings, which also stops algae greening the surface.

The labour is real. Filling a cell tray takes seconds. Making the same number of blocks takes minutes, plus mixing time and rinsing the blocker between pressings. At home garden scale that is pleasant. At several hundred plants it is a decision.

Crop suitability varies. Brassicas, lettuce, alliums and most flowers block beautifully. Anything with a brittle taproot that resents disturbance is better direct-sown, and very small seed is awkward without a micro-blocker.
