The first frost warning of October puts most pepper plants in the compost. That wastes a plant that took eight weeks to raise from seed and another ten to hit its stride. Peppers are perennials. Bring the right ones indoors the right way and they come back a month ahead of anything you sow in January.

Species matters for another reason. Annuums have soft green stems that die back hard in a cool garage; chinense, baccatum and frutescens build a woody frame by autumn that takes the rough treatment below. Room for two pots? Make them the two hottest things you grew.

Cut it back hard
Prune to a Y of main stems 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) tall with two or three nodes on each. Strip every leaf. It looks like you killed it. Leaves are where aphids and whitefly eggs ride indoors, and a leafless plant stops transpiring, which is what lets it survive on almost no water.
Dig, wash and repot
Lift the root ball, knock off the garden soil, and rinse the roots under a hose. Trim to fit a 1 to 2 gallon pot.
