You planted a pollinator garden. You bought the seed mix with the cheerful label, scattered it along the fence, and watched it bloom. And yet the squash still needs hand-pollinating and the aphids on the kale are winning.
The problem is usually plant choice, not effort. Most "pollinator" mixes sold in the US are built from garden-centre annuals that happen to make nectar, not from the plants your local insects evolved alongside. Goldenrod is the plant most American gardeners are wrong about. It does not cause hay fever, its pollen is too heavy to blow around, and it blooms in late August and September, exactly when your tomatoes and squash are still setting fruit but little else is flowering. When you choose plants from your own region's list rather than a national seed mix, you are not just picking prettier flowers, you are slotting your garden into a succession the local insects already run on. The Rodale Institute recommends insectary strips 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 m) wide every 6 to 8 crop rows, to boost natural enemy survival and increase predation of cucumber beetle at every life stage. Scaled down, the home version is one 3-foot border along the sunniest edge, plus a small island bed if you have room.
Pick the sunny edge and mark 3 feet
Choose the side of your beds that gets the most afternoon sun and is easiest to leave undisturbed. Mark a strip 3 feet (0.9 m) wide with a hose or string. Budget about 2 hours for layout and clearing.
Choose 9 to 12 species across three bloom windows
Three or four for spring, three or four for midsummer, three or four for fall, named from your regional Xerces list. Plugs run roughly $4 to $8 each; seed is cheaper but adds a year.
Plant in drifts of three, tallest at the back

Invasive is a term reserved for non-native species that spread and cause harm, so technically no. But plenty of natives are aggressive in the rich, watered conditions of a garden bed. Canada goldenrod, common mountain mint and some sunflowers will run through a small border in three seasons.
