Row Cover: How Many Degrees It Really Buys You
The frost warning comes through at 4pm and everyone reaches for the same thing: a roll of white fabric in the shed. What almost nobody knows is how much protection that particular roll actually gives, because the difference between the lightest and heaviest grades is not marginal. It is the difference between two degrees and ten.
How Much Frost Protection Does Row Cover Actually Give?
Between about 2°F and 10°F, entirely depending on the fabric weight. Buy by weight, not by the picture on the packet.
Spunbonded row cover is sold by weight in ounces per square yard, and that number predicts almost everything else about it. University of Wisconsin Horticulture puts the light grades at 0.45 to 0.5 oz per square yard and the heavy grades between 1.5 and 2.2.
University of New Hampshire Extension attaches the numbers that matter: a lightweight cover might give 2°F of frost protection, while a heavyweight might give as much as 6°F to 10°F. A 0.6 oz fabric raises the temperature underneath by roughly 2 to 3 degrees.

The trade is right there in those last two cards. The heavy grades that hold 10 degrees also cut light transmission to 30 to 40 percent, which is a real cost on a short November day. Insect-barrier grades block only about 10 percent of light and buy you almost no warmth.

Fine mesh netting is worth knowing about separately. It is engineered for exclusion rather than insulation, passing nearly all the light and most of the airflow while stopping insects a spunbonded fabric of the same openness would let through. In a hot August it is the difference between a covered bed and a wilted one.
Why Does the Same Cover Work Better Some Nights?
Because there are two kinds of cold, and row cover only really defends against one of them.
A radiation frost happens on a clear, still night. The ground radiates the day's stored heat straight up to a cloudless sky and the air just above the soil drops below freezing while the air ten feet up stays warmer. A cover intercepts that outgoing radiation and re-radiates part of it down. This is where the published degree figures come from, and it works well.
An advective freeze is a cold air mass arriving on wind. The cold is not local, it is being delivered continuously, and a fabric that relies on trapping a still layer of warm air has very little to trap. On a windy freeze night, expect much less than the number on the packet.
The other reliable disappointment is contact damage. Any leaf pressed directly against the fabric conducts heat straight through it and freezes anyway, which is why a bed under a draped cover comes out in the morning with browned tips on the tallest plants and perfect growth six inches below.
Hoops solve this. They also stop the fabric crushing seedlings and let you get a second layer over the top on the worst nights.
Why This Works: Storing Heat in Thermal Mass
The soil is the battery and the fabric is the lid. Permaculture design leans on thermal mass everywhere: stone walls that release warmth at night, water barrels in a greenhouse, a south-facing brick surface behind a tender plant. A row cover is the cheapest possible version of that principle, which is also why it fails on soil that never got any sun to store. A cover that excludes cucumber beetles also excludes bees, and on squash that means no fruit. This single mistake costs more harvests than frost does.
Row covers exclude cucumber beetles, squash bugs and squash vine borer from cucumber, melon, pumpkin and squash. They work. But University of Minnesota Extension is clear that covering plants during bloom results in no fruit setting during that period, because the pollinators cannot reach the flowers.
Know whether the crop needs a pollinator
Squash, cucumber, melon and pumpkin do. Beans, peas, tomatoes and peppers self-pollinate. Greens, roots and brassicas harvested before flowering never need uncovering, which is why fall arugula can stay sealed from sowing to harvest.
For cucurbits, cover from transplant to first flower
That window covers the early pest pressure while the plant is most vulnerable, then opens the bed to bees exactly when it needs them.
Or time removal to the pest, not the plant
Extension guidance suggests uncovering after the peak of squash vine borer flight, generally around mid-August, so the crop is open for pollination once the moths have gone.
Hand pollinate only if you must stay covered
It works, with a soft brush and ten minutes each morning, and it is realistic for three plants and unrealistic for thirty.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Never cover a bed that grew the same crop family last season. Flea beetles, cucumber beetles and squash vine borer all overwinter in the soil, so a cover laid over infested ground is a greenhouse for the pest and a wall against its predators. How Do You Actually Set It Up?
Hoops every 4 to 5 feet, edges buried, and a plan for venting on sunny days.
Hoops from 9-gauge wire or half-inch PVC keep the fabric clear of foliage and let you leave it on for weeks rather than draping and re-draping. Bury or weight every inch of the perimeter, because a gap the width of a pencil is a functioning entrance for a flea beetle and a chimney for warm air.
Ventilation matters more than most gardeners expect. On a clear autumn day, temperatures under a heavy cover climb fast, and a crop that survived 26°F overnight can bolt or scorch by 2pm. If daytime highs are above the mid-60s Fahrenheit, open the ends or roll one side back.
Cost runs roughly $0.15 to $0.50 per square foot depending on weight, and a roll handled carefully lasts three to five seasons. UV exposure is what finishes it: the fabric goes brittle, tears along the fold lines, and eventually shreds. It is polypropylene, so it is not compostable and is rarely accepted in curbside recycling, which is a genuine argument for buying the heavier grade that lasts longer rather than replacing a cheap one annually.
