Most people with a woodlot treat it as scenery with a firewood habit. Forest farming asks a different question: what could this stand produce every year, without cutting it down?
The answer, in the eastern United States, is ginseng, ramps, mushrooms, medicinal roots and decorative greens. Crops that need shade, growing under a canopy that is already there. It is the one agroforestry practice where the trees are the existing asset rather than the thing you have to plant and wait twenty years for.

Forest farming is the deliberate cultivation of crops under a managed forest canopy. The USDA National Agroforestry Center counts it as one of the five recognised US agroforestry practices, alongside alley cropping, silvopasture, windbreaks and riparian forest buffers. NRCS gives it its own conservation practice standard, Code 379, sometimes called multi-story cropping.
The word doing the work is deliberate. Three things are often confused:

The practical difference from starting a food forest is that you begin with mature shade rather than spending a decade producing it. The practical difference from silvopasture is that nobody is grazing anything, so the canopy stays much denser.
Four crops carry most US forest farming. Each has a different time horizon, which matters more than the price per pound.
Shiitake on logs is the fastest return and the best entry point. Six to eighteen months from inoculation to first flush.
Ramps are slow from seed, faster from transplanted bulbs, and command high restaurant prices in spring. Harvest sustainably or you will wipe out the patch, since a bed takes years to recover.
Goldenseal and black cohosh sit in the medicinal market and reach harvest faster than ginseng, at lower value per pound.
American ginseng is the headline crop and the hardest. Seven to twelve years to harvest for the wild-simulated method, and a price gap between methods that decides everything.
Ohio State University Extension lays out the three production methods side by side, and the comparison is the single most useful thing in US forest farming literature.
Field-grown ginseng under artificial shade is fast, four years to a crop, and worth $10 to $25 per dry pound. Setting up an acre of shade structures runs $10,000 to $20,000. Extension's own table shows a net loss on that method.
Wild-simulated ginseng takes seven to twelve years, needs almost no inputs beyond a rake, seed and labour, and has averaged $350 to $500 per dry pound over a decade. Same plant. The Asian market pays for the gnarled, slow-grown root, not the carrot-shaped one.
Ohio State's half-acre comparison put wild-simulated costs at about $9,690 against a gross of $36,000, for a net around $26,000 across the full cycle. Their worked example on a smaller scale: one pound of stratified seed at $85 to $150 covers 1,600 sq ft (149 sq m), and if half the seed reaches maturity you might dig roughly 12.7 lb (5.8 kg) of dry root after ten years.
Site selection is not negotiable. Ginseng wants north or east-facing well-drained slopes under 70 to 90 percent shade. Tulip poplar, sugar maple and black walnut indicate good ground. So do goldenseal, bloodroot, trillium, wild ginger, jack-in-the-pulpit and spicebush growing already. If those plants are absent, the site is telling you something.
Planting is a rake, 4 to 5 seeds per square foot on scratched soil in autumn, then leaf litter back over the top. The seed must be stratified, which is why it goes in before the ground freezes, and it is the same cold-moist dormancy break that native tree seed needs.
Why This Works: Working With Succession, Not Against It
A mature hardwood stand has already done the expensive part of ecosystem building: deep leaf litter, fungal networks, buffered humidity, stable soil temperature. Forest farming rents that infrastructure rather than rebuilding it. The crops that pay best are precisely the ones that evolved to live in it and cannot be grown cheaply anywhere else, which is why the market rewards the slow version. That is the same insight underneath syntropic agriculture: stack your production on the successional stage the land is already in.
If ginseng is a pension, shiitake is a wage. Virginia Cooperative Extension publication ANR-102 is the reference, and it includes a full budget for 500 logs.
Cut logs in dormancy
Fell after leaf drop and before bud break, when sap is in the wood. White oak is the benchmark, though other oaks, sweetgum, hornbeam, beech, birch and hickory all work. Target 4 ft (1.2 m) lengths at 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) diameter, with plenty of sapwood and no rot. Suppressed and deformed trees are ideal, which means thinning and cropping become the same job.
Inoculate two to four weeks after cutting
Drill rows of holes 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) apart along the log, with rows 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) apart around the circumference. Push a thimbleful of sawdust spawn into each hole and seal it with hot wax or a short piece of foam backer rod. The seal keeps moisture in and competing fungi out.
Stack in 60 to 85 percent shade and wait
Crib or log-cabin stacks, off the ground, where rain reaches them. Dappled woodland shade is close to ideal. Log moisture wants to stay between 35 and 55 percent by weight. The spawn run takes six to eighteen months, and you will see white mottling on the log ends when it is finished.
Soak to force a flush
Fully immerse a colonised log in cold water for 24 hours, restack it in an A-frame, and mushrooms appear within a week to ten days. Rest the log for several weeks before soaking again. Oak logs produce for four to five years, with years two and three the heaviest.
The Virginia Tech budget, which charges for the grower's own labour at $10 to $18 per hour, comes out at a break-even price of $11.25 per pound and a break-even yield of 1,512 lb (686 kg) across four years, with an internal rate of return of 26 percent. Their price assumptions were $10 to $20 per pound retail and $4 to $8 wholesale in Virginia.

Ask how visible the site is from a road, how often strangers cross the land, and how often you can check it. Penalties vary by state, and enforcement is real. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has run multi-state investigations into illegal ginseng trafficking. Harvest seasons and export rules also apply, because wild American ginseng is regulated under CITES, so check your state wildlife agency before digging anything.
Extension guidance is consistent that forest farming rarely stands alone as a livelihood on a small woodlot. It works as one line in a diversified operation: timber, off-farm income, direct marketing, value-added products.
Deer browse ginseng foliage. Slugs and competing fungi hit mushroom logs. The labour is seasonal and lumpy, concentrated in autumn planting and harvest. And the market for medicinal roots is narrow enough that a bad year in Asian demand moves your price more than anything you do on the ground.
The honest framing: it is a good way to make a woodlot pay something, and a poor way to make a woodlot pay everything.
