Ask most people when to plant a tree and they will say spring. Ask an extension forester and you will get a more interesting answer: for a good number of species, autumn gives the tree a head start that spring planting cannot match, because roots keep working for weeks after the canopy has shut down for the year.
That advantage is real, it is measurable, and it is species-specific. Get the species list wrong and fall planting becomes an expensive way to lose stock over winter.
Root growth and shoot growth are decoupled in temperate woody plants. Leaves senesce and drop as daylength shortens, but roots keep elongating as long as the soil is moist and warm enough. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension puts the cut-off plainly: root growth continues late into fall until soil temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 C). So a tree planted in September in most of the country gets six to ten weeks of active root growth before dormancy, then hits spring with a functioning root system instead of a stub. That is the whole argument, and it is a good one.
