Composting Tea Bags: Which Ones Break Down and Which Do Not

You finish a cup of tea, drop the bag in the compost caddy, and feel mildly virtuous about it. Then six months later you are screening finished compost and there they are: ghostly translucent tea bag skeletons sitting on top of the mesh, refusing to break down.

That residue is the tell. Most conventional tea bags are not pure paper, and the part that will not rot is a thin polymer web that was melted in to seal the edges. This guide covers what tea bags are actually made of, what the microplastics research does and does not show, and the two-second test that tells you whether to compost a bag whole or tear it open first.

There are three constructions on the shelf, and they behave completely differently in a compost pile.

The traditional flat rectangular bag, folded and closed with a staple or a paper tag on a string, is usually the cleanest. Its filter paper is typically made from abaca fibre, sometimes called manila hemp, blended with wood pulp, and if there is no heat seal there may be no polymer at all. The staple is the only thing to pick out.

The rounded "pillow" bag with a crimped, slightly glossy edge is the most common type in US supermarkets, and it is heat-sealed. To make the paper bond to itself under a hot roller, manufacturers blend thermoplastic fibre into the filter web, most often polypropylene. Patent literature covering heat-sealable filter materials describes thermoplastic content at around 20 to 25 percent of the web by weight. That fraction does not biodegrade in a garden compost pile. It stays as a fine mesh long after the paper fibre has gone.

The transparent pyramid or "silken" bag is the outlier. These are not paper at all. They are woven from nylon or PET, or in some newer products from PLA, a plant-derived bioplastic. The mesh types are simply plastic, and no amount of turning your pile will change that.

What the Microplastics Research Actually Found

The headline number is real, and it is worth stating precisely rather than dramatically. A 2019 study by Laura Hernandez and colleagues at McGill University, published in Environmental Science and Technology, took four commercially available plastic pyramid tea bags, removed the leaves, and steeped the empty bags in water at 203 F (95 C) to simulate brewing.

They found that a single plastic teabag released approximately 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles into one cup. The particles were confirmed by spectroscopy to have come from the bags, which were made of nylon and PET. The authors noted the levels were several orders of magnitude higher than plastic loads previously reported in other foods.

Here is what that study did not do, and being clear about it matters. It measured particle release from empty bags under controlled brewing conditions. It did not measure health effects in humans, and it did not test conventional paper bags. The health consequences of ingesting these particles remain genuinely uncertain, and anyone telling you they know for sure is going beyond the evidence in either direction.

Why This Works: Closing the Loop Properly

Permaculture's fertility principle is that waste from one part of the system becomes an input somewhere else. That only holds if what you return is actually returnable. Putting a polypropylene mesh into your compost is not closing a loop, it is quietly moving plastic from your kitchen into your vegetable beds, where it stays. A closed loop that leaks contaminants is not a closed loop, and the discipline of checking inputs is what separates real cycling from the appearance of it.

How to Test a Tea Bag in Under a Minute

Look at the edge

A crimped, slightly shiny, fused seam means heat-sealed, which means polymer. A folded and stapled edge or a stitched one usually means no sealant. This single check sorts most bags correctly.

Do the wet tear test

Wet the used bag and pull it apart between finger and thumb. Pure paper tears easily and cleanly, like wet tissue. If it stretches, resists, or leaves a stringy web at the tear line, there is plastic in it.

Read the box, then verify

"Plastic-free" and "home compostable" are meaningful claims; "biodegradable" on its own is close to meaningless. Brands change formulation regularly, so check the current packaging rather than an article from three years ago, including this one.

When in doubt, tear and tip

Split the bag over the caddy, tip the leaves in, bin the empty bag. It takes two seconds and removes the question entirely. The leaves were the valuable part all along.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Do not assume "compostable" means your bin. Most compostable bioplastics, PLA included, are certified against industrial composting standards that require sustained temperatures a backyard pile rarely reaches or holds. A separate and much less common "home compostable" certification exists, and if the packaging does not carry it, treat the bag as non-compostable at home. This is the same trap that catches people with compostable cups and cutlery.

What the Tea Leaves Themselves Are Worth

Spent tea leaves are a genuinely good compost input, and this part is uncomplicated. The EPA and university extension composting guides list tea and coffee grounds together as nitrogen-rich "greens", alongside vegetable peelings and fresh grass clippings. They are wet, they break down quickly, and they add nitrogen that helps the carbon-rich browns in your pile decompose, in much the same way coffee grounds do.

The standard ratio guidance applies: aim for roughly two to three times the volume of browns to greens. Tea leaves on their own will go slimy and anaerobic in quantity, so bury them in the pile rather than layering them on top, and pair them with shredded leaves, cardboard or straw.
