Most companion planting advice assumes you can change your mind next season. With asparagus you cannot. A bed planted this spring will still be producing in the 2040s, which turns "what should I plant beside it" from a casual question into a design decision with a twenty-year tail.
That changes the answer considerably. It also means the famous asparagus and tomato pairing deserves a harder look than it usually gets, because if you commit a permanent bed to a claim that turns out to be folklore, you are stuck with it. Notice how much the row spacing varies. Michigan State's 4 to 5 feet and Penn State's 5 to 6 feet leave genuinely usable alleys. Minnesota's 3 feet does not. If you want companions, plan for wide rows at the outset, because you will not be widening them in year six.
The evidence does not support it, in either direction. This is the most repeated companion claim for asparagus, and it comes in two halves.
The first half says tomato foliage repels asparagus beetle through solanine. Neither Cornell's asparagus beetle management guidance nor Michigan State's pest bulletin mentions companion plants at all. Both focus on scouting, sanitation and threshold-based treatment. Cornell's threshold is 5 to 10% of spears carrying adults; MSU's is 1 to 2% of spears with eggs during harvest.
The second half says asparagus protects tomatoes from root-knot nematodes via asparagusic acid. That has a real basis, just not a proven field application. Researchers isolated asparagusic acid from asparagus roots at concentrations of at least 35 ppm and demonstrated nematicidal activity. What nobody has shown is that a neighbouring tomato benefits from it in a garden.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Do not plant tomatoes inside the asparagus row. Even setting aside the unproven pest claim, tomatoes are annuals that need digging out and replanting every year, in soil occupied by crowns you must not disturb. If you want them near, put them in a separate bed on the north side where they will not be shaded by the summer fern.
Asparagus poisons the ground against its own replacement, and it is the most interesting thing about the crop. Kato-Noguchi's 2018 research isolated a phenolic autotoxic compound that inhibits asparagus seedling growth at the concentrations found in declining fields.
Later work by López-Moreno and colleagues characterised asparagus decline syndrome as a multifactorial problem combining oxidative stress, altered hormone signalling and phenolic accumulation with soil pathogen pressure.
Extension practice has caught up with this. Rutgers advises selecting a site not planted to asparagus for at least ten years. That is a longer exclusion than almost anything else in vegetable growing.
Why This Works: The Plant Is Editing Its Own Neighbourhood
Autotoxicity looks like a design flaw until you think about it from the plant's side. A long-lived perennial that suppressed its own seedlings would keep the space it had already claimed rather than being crowded out by its offspring. Allelopathy is how a great many perennials manage competition, which is worth remembering whenever you plan a bed of perennial vegetables: they are chemically negotiating with each other whether you plan for it or not.
The honest limit on this: the research documents autotoxicity toward asparagus itself. Whether those same compounds meaningfully suppress unrelated neighbours has not been quantified. Treat it as a reason to keep asparagus out of ground it has already occupied, not as proof that nothing else will grow nearby.

Keep a clear strip over the row
You need to sidedress fertilizer along the crowns every year, in spring and again right after the last harvest. A companion growing directly over the row intercepts it. Leave 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) clear.
Use the alleys, not the row
Shallow-rooted perennial herbs, low flowers for pollinators and beneficials, or a mown grass path. Anything you can walk on and cut back hard without touching a crown.
Avoid anything that holds moisture at the crown
Fusarium and Phytophthora both thrive in wet soil around crowns. Dense ground cover right up against the row traps moisture and holds diseased fern debris you should be clearing each winter.
Mulch the alleys instead of planting them
Asparagus competes poorly with weeds at every stage. A thick alley mulch does more for the bed than most living companions, with none of the competition. Free arborist wood chips work well here.
Practical picks: parsley, dill, coriander and calendula along the bed edge, which feed the parasitoids and predators that do attack beetle larvae. Alliums in the alleys, which occupy a narrow column and share no diseases. Low-growing perennial herbs like thyme at the sunny margin. None of this is proven to reduce beetle counts, but none of it costs the crop anything either.
Years one and two are the only window when the bed genuinely has room to spare. Minnesota says no harvest until two years after planting crowns, three from seed. Illinois puts the first real harvest in year three and caps it at about a month.
Rutgers gives the cleanest schedule: harvest 2 to 3 weeks in the third growing season, 4 to 6 weeks in the fourth, and 6 weeks from the fifth onward, then let the ferns run.
During those first two seasons the ferns are thin and the alleys are open. Radish, leaf lettuce, spinach and other quick shallow crops will fit, provided you pull them cleanly and never dig near a crown. Once the stand matures and you are cutting every one to two days through a six-week harvest, you want unobstructed access more than you want an extra lettuce.
Get the soil right before any of this. Rutgers recommends pH 6.5 to 6.8 on deep, well-drained sandy loam, and Oregon State advises digging the bed at least 12 inches (30 cm) deep with plenty of organic matter. You get one chance at that, in the trench, before the crowns go in. The same logic we applied to other long-season root crops holds double here.

No field trial has shown that a neighbouring tomato benefits.
In the first two seasons, yes. The ferns are thin and the alleys are open, so shallow quick crops like radish, lettuce and spinach fit fine as long as you pull them cleanly. From year three onward, when you are harvesting every one to two days for six weeks, prioritise access. Keep an 18 to 24 inch (45 to 60 cm) clear strip over the row for fertilizer sidedressing and use the alleys for mulch or low herbs at the edges.
Ten to fifteen crowns per person is the usual planning figure for regular fresh eating, more if you want to freeze. At the standard 12 inch (30 cm) crown spacing that is roughly 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 m) of row each. Commercial density gives useful context: Penn State reports 12,000 to 14,000 plants per acre at 12 inches in the row on 5 to 6 foot centres. Plant generously at the start, since expanding an established bed means disturbing ground the crowns already claim.
Likely a combination rather than one cause. Research on asparagus decline syndrome points to accumulated autotoxic phenolics, oxidative stress and soil pathogen pressure acting together, which is why beds slow after ten to fifteen years despite good management. Fusarium crown and root rot is usually part of it. Check the obvious things first: weed competition, whether you are still feeding annually, and whether you have been harvesting too long into the season. Cutting past the six to eight week window starves the crowns.
