You got the email. A plot came free, it is 10 by 20 feet, and the season starts in six weeks. Now what?

A rented community plot is not a small home garden. It has rules, no storage, shared water, neighbors whose sunflowers will shade your carrots, and a waiting list behind you if you let it go to seed. Everything below is written for those constraints, because the standard vegetable garden advice assumes you can walk out of your kitchen at seven in the morning, and you cannot.

How Big Is a Community Garden Plot and What Will It Give You?

Most US plots sit between 100 and 500 square feet. NC State Extension's community garden bulletin describes the pattern that has become the de facto standard: a quarter-acre lot divided into about 35 plots of 10 by 20 feet, separated by 3-foot paths wide enough for a wheelbarrow. Some programs run smaller: 4 by 8 foot raised platforms are common for beginners, and 20 by 20 foot ground plots exist at the larger end. Fees typically run $25 to $50 a year.

On yield, be careful what you believe. Bare soil in a community garden is a weed nursery, and the seed bank blowing in from the abandoned plot two rows over is not your friend. Woodchips on paths, straw or shredded leaves on beds. This is the single biggest labor saving available to an infrequent visitor.

If the site has one standpipe and hand watering only, drought-tolerant and deep-rooted crops earn their place and thirsty shallow-rooted ones do not. A single bed you resow every three weeks with radish, salad, bush beans and turnips keeps the plot productive from May to October without any complicated planning. Everything else can be set-and-forget.

Why This Works: Zone Planning

Permaculture organizes a site by how often you visit each part of it. Zone 1 is the ground you walk past daily, Zone 4 is what you see twice a year. A rented plot compresses the whole system into one rectangle, so the same logic applies at small scale: put the crops that need constant attention nearest the path and the gate, and the ones you can ignore for two weeks at the far end. It is the same reasoning behind a permaculture layout at any size.

Does Interplanting Actually Produce More From a Small Bed?

Yes, and there is a measured way to say so. The land equivalent ratio compares the yield of two crops grown together against the same crops grown separately on the same total area. Anything above 1.0 means the mixture beat the monocultures.

Vegetable intercropping trials regularly clear that bar. One published lettuce and rocket intercropping study reported land equivalent ratios above 1.0 in both seasons, with the mixture 41% more efficient than growing each alone. A SARE-funded project on small-scale vegetable intercropping found that space-hungry crops can be grown profitably at small scale when paired with fast, short crops, broccoli with lettuce being one of the tested combinations.

Be honest about which claims have that backing, though. The yield advantage from pairing a fast crop with a slow one, or a tall one with a shade-tolerant one, is well supported and mechanically obvious: you are harvesting the radishes before the carrots need the space. The claims about specific plants repelling specific pests through scent are a much thinner literature, and a lot of what circulates as a companion planting chart is inherited folklore rather than trial data.

What Nobody Tells You About Sharing a Site

Three things, in ascending order of how much they will cost you.

Weed pressure from abandoned plots. Every community garden has one or two plots that go to seed in July. Lambsquarters and pigweed produce tens of thousands of seeds per plant and the wind does the rest. You cannot fix your neighbor's plot, so you cover your own soil and you edge your paths.

Disease moving down the rows. Plots sit a few feet apart with shared tools and shared boots, which is close to ideal conditions for late blight on tomatoes, downy mildew on cucurbits and clubroot on brassicas. Rotate within your own plot, do not share unwashed tools, and pull infected material rather than composting it on site.

What is in the soil. This is the one that matters most and gets asked about least. Many community gardens sit on former industrial land, demolition sites or old residential lots where lead paint weathered into the ground.

Test Before You Plant

Michigan State Extension advises not planting where soil lead reaches 300 ppm or higher, and the EPA treats 400 ppm as a hazard in bare play areas. Ask the garden coordinator whether the site has been tested. If nobody knows, test it yourself: a lead screen is usually a small add-on to a standard soil test.

The reassuring part, from Cornell's Waste Management Institute guidance on metals in garden soils, is that plants take up very little lead. The real exposure route is soil dust and soil stuck to produce, not the vegetables themselves. So the mitigations are practical rather than drastic: keep bare soil covered with mulch, keep the pH between 6 and 7 to reduce availability, wash and peel root crops, take your shoes off before getting in the car, and use raised beds with clean soil where readings are high.
