What Is Black Locust, and Why Do Permaculture People Keep Planting It?
Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is the tree that keeps turning up in permaculture reading lists, and for once the enthusiasm is earned. It fixes its own nitrogen, grows faster than almost anything else you could plant, and produces heartwood so decay resistant that people build fences from it instead of buying pressure-treated posts.
It is also listed as an invasive species in parts of the United States, and most of the plant is toxic to horses. Both things are true at the same time, which is why this is a tree to plant deliberately rather than casually.
The USDA Forest Service silvics account describes it as a medium-sized tree, 40 to 60 feet tall and 12 to 30 inches in diameter (12 to 18 m, 30 to 76 cm), reaching 100 feet on the best sites. Its natural range is the Appalachians and the Ozarks, but it has naturalised across most of the country and beyond.

How Do You Tell Black Locust From Honey Locust?
Look at where the thorns are, not how sharp they are. Honey locust carries large branched thorns on the trunk and major limbs, sometimes 8 inches (20 cm) long and forked like antlers. Trunk armament means honey locust. The pods are the easiest winter check. Black locust pods are short, flat and straight, and many hang on into spring. Honey locust pods are long and often corkscrewed. If you are standing under a bare tree in January, look at the ground.
What Is the Wood Actually Good For?
Posts, poles, and anything that touches soil. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook describes black locust heartwood as very heavy, very hard, very resistant to shock, very strong and stiff, with moderately low shrinkage and high decay resistance. Historically it went into mine timbers, railroad crossties, fence posts, poles, stakes and ship pegs, which is a list of jobs where failure is expensive.
Here is where I have to be straight with you, because most articles are not. The commonly repeated claim that black locust posts last 50 or more years does not appear in any current USDA or extension publication with a number attached. The decay-resistance rating is documented. The specific service life is folklore built on older, non-digitised literature and long field experience. It is probably close to right. It is not a published figure, and you should not plan a fence budget around a number nobody has measured recently.
What is documented is yield. USDA silvics reports that 27-year-old plantations in the Central States averaged about 1,800 cubic feet per acre (126 m³/ha), equating to roughly 1,100 posts per acre. That is a real number, and it is the one that makes locust interesting to anyone fencing paddocks.
Two Practical Cautions
Strip the sapwood before you set a post. Only the heartwood carries the decay resistance, and the creamy-white sapwood band rots at an ordinary rate. Second, this wood is genuinely hard: expect to pre-drill, expect to blunt chains, and expect at least a year of seasoning for split firewood because high density means slow drying.
How Fast Does It Grow, and How Much Nitrogen Does It Add?
Fast, then it stops. Black locust is a pioneer, and it behaves like one: explosive early growth, then a marked slowdown after roughly 30 years.

That nitrogen figure deserves a caveat. It comes from European stands and studies published in 2004 and 2013, not a US-wide average. What the 2015 research adds is more interesting for a dry-summer garden: under drought stress, black locust increased nodule biomass to keep fixation going, holding leaf nitrogen steady at 2.8 to 3.0 percent regardless of water regime. The tree does not simply give up when it gets thirsty.
Why This Works: Obtain a Yield From Succession
Permaculture design borrows the pattern from natural succession, where fast, nitrogen-fixing pioneers colonise bare ground, build fertility, then get shaded out by slower species. Black locust is that pioneer role made explicit. You plant it knowing it peaks early and declines by 50, which is why it belongs in a rotation or a support role beside the canopy layer of a food forest rather than as the permanent overstory itself.
How Do You Grow and Coppice It?
Scarify the seed, or skip seed entirely
The seed coat is hard and waterproof. A 2017 study found mechanical scarification, 75 minutes in sulphuric acid, 90 minutes in boiling water, or microwave treatment all gave high germination. Boiling water is the only one worth doing at home. Bare-root seedlings from a nursery are simpler, and cold stratification alone will not fix this dormancy.
Site it on open, disturbed, well-drained ground
Seedlings are intolerant of shade and of herbaceous competition. NRCS gives a tolerance range of 16 to 65 inches of annual rainfall and at least 36 inches of rooting depth. It struggles in shallow or waterlogged soils and will not establish under an existing canopy.
Cut on rotation, in the dormant season
Hungarian coppice practice uses 20 to 25 year cycles for post-sized stems, with growth peaking around age 25, and 3 to 6 year cycles for pollarded shoots. Avoid cutting during the June to July flush. Stumps resprout faster than seedlings grow, which is the whole appeal of coppicing as a management system.
Stop after two or three cycles
The same European guidance warns against coppicing the same stools three or more times: stand quality falls and root systems become exhausted. Plan the replacement before the decline, not after it.
Watch for locust borer
Locust borer (Megacyllene robiniae) is the reason many US plantings fail to make clean timber. Trees stressed on poor sites are the most vulnerable, so good siting is the main defence available to a homesteader.

It spreads by root, and cutting it makes that worse. Black locust suckers vigorously from roots and from severed roots, forming dense clonal groves. The Wisconsin DNR lists it as Restricted, noting that it invades forests, upland prairies, savannas, pastures and old fields, and that its clones exclude native vegetation. The California Invasive Plant Council reports it widespread below about 6,300 feet in northern California, spreading through floodplains and disturbed woodland.
The ecological damage is more subtle than shading. A 2013 study of black locust invasion in northeastern forests found soils under locust had elevated nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, higher net mineralisation and nitrification, and more organic matter than adjacent pine-oak stands. The effect outlived the trees: 14 years after removal, nitrogen and nitrification were still elevated, and both invaded and post-removal sites carried more non-native plant cover. Enriching a nutrient-poor native system is not a favour to it.
Then there is toxicity. A 2024 veterinary case report on two poisoned horses states that apart from the flowers, all parts of the plant are toxic, with the toxins robin, robinin and robitin concentrated in the bark and rising in autumn. Ingestion up to about 70 grams of bark produced colic; larger amounts produced neurological signs including ataxia and possible paralysis, typically one to two hours after eating. Horses are the most susceptible species named. Do not use locust as a paddock rail where horses can chew it.

Very fast when young, then it slows sharply. USDA silvics data from the Central States records 1.5 feet of height growth per year on poor sites and 4 feet or more on good ones through the first decade. Seedlings in North Carolina reached 26 feet in three years, and mine reclamation plantings in Kansas hit 23 feet in ten. The NRCS Plant Guide gives a more conservative 2 to 3 feet per year for nursery stock. Growth drops off noticeably after about 30 years.
Are black locust flowers edible?
The flowers are the one part consistently described as not toxic, and the 2024 veterinary source states that apart from the inflorescences all parts of the plant are toxic. They are traditionally eaten fried as fritters. That said, the surrounding foliage, bark and pods are toxic, so anyone foraging needs confident identification and needs to take only the blossoms. If you are unsure whether the tree in front of you is black locust or something else, do not eat any of it.
