Two people can look at the same bare hillside and both say "plant a forest that feeds us." One starts by asking what grew here before people cleared it. The other asks what wants to grow here next. Different questions, genuinely different farms.

What Is the Difference Between Analog Forestry and Syntropic Agriculture?

Analog forestry designs backwards from the original forest. Syntropic agriculture designs forwards from succession. Analog forestry takes the mature native vegetation of a place as its reference model and builds a productive planting that matches its structure and ecological function, species by species and layer by layer. Syntropic agriculture takes the ecological process of succession as its reference and drives it deliberately, planting pioneers and climax species together on day one and pruning hard to keep the system in a state of accelerated growth.

Both are agroforestry, both reject synthetic inputs, both build soil. But the design logic runs in opposite directions, and that shows up in what you plant, how often you cut, and how long you wait to eat anything.

Where Did Each System Come From?

Analog forestry was named by Sri Lankan systems ecologist Ranil Senanayake in 1987. The context was deforestation and the ecological flattening that came with plantation monoculture. Senanayake founded the Belipola arboretum in Sri Lanka, widely described as the world's first analog forest, and later the International Analog Forestry Network, which now links partner organisations across Latin America, Africa and Asia and marks roughly thirty years of history. He remains an honorary board member.

The peer-reviewed definition is precise. Veintimilla and colleagues, writing in Forestry: An International Journal of Forest Research, describe a silvicultural approach establishing trees "analogous in structure and ecological function to the original climax or subclimax vegetation of the region where they are planted," with high biodiversity, commercial products, and no agrochemicals or fossil fuels.

Syntropic agriculture came out of a ruined cocoa landscape in Bahia, Brazil. Ernst Götsch, a Swiss plant breeder, moved to Brazil in the early 1980s and took on degraded Atlantic Forest pasture that had lost its topsoil and its springs. He renamed the farm Olhos d'Água, after the springs that came back. A report archived at Wageningen University records that within five years the land was covered by a productive agroforest and water was flowing again.

Götsch's own project describes the method's core rule simply: the soil always remains occupied by growing species, with continuous photosynthesis, constant biomass input and deliberate stimulation of soil life. Why This Works: Succession as a Design Tool

Both systems treat succession as something you can steer rather than something that happens to you. Analog forestry aims at the destination and plants a productive version of it. Syntropic agriculture works the mechanism itself, using pruning to send the pulse of nutrients and light that a natural disturbance would otherwise supply. Permaculture calls this working with, not against, the ecosystem's own direction of travel.

How Do the Two Methods Actually Differ?

Shared principles are easy to list and not useful. Here is where they diverge.

The pruning difference surprises people. In a syntropic system you are not tidying. You cut vigorous pioneers back hard and often, drop the material as mulch, and use that shock of light and biomass to push slower climax species forward. What Has Actually Been Measured?

This is where the honest answer is uncomfortable for both camps: the evidence base is thin, and most of what circulates online is practitioner reporting rather than measurement.

Analog forestry has the best-documented result. The Ecuador study in Forestry compared a 17-year-old analog forest with a teak plantation and a degraded pasture in Cumandá Canton. The analog forest stored 178 tonnes of carbon per hectare, against 141 for teak and 124 for degraded pasture. The detail that matters is underground: teak had lower soil carbon than the pasture it replaced, while the analog forest balanced above and below-ground carbon best and yielded a far wider range of products.

One site, one comparison, one region, and the authors say so themselves, noting how little formal research has evaluated analog forestry.

Syntropic agriculture's headline results at Fazenda Olhos d'Água are real but mostly documented in Portuguese-language agency reports, theses and practitioner accounts rather than English-language journals. The springs returning is well attested. The frequently quoted species counts and carbon figures are not backed by a published inventory you can check, a point worth keeping in mind when reading any introduction to syntropic agriculture, including ours.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Treating either system's most impressive numbers as settled science. Figures like "hundreds of species per hectare" or "sequesters more carbon than primary forest" circulate widely with no traceable source. If you are making a land-use decision or writing a grant application, use the Ecuador carbon study and the German quarry trial, which are published and checkable, and describe everything else as promising practitioner evidence.

Do These Systems Work Outside the Tropics?

Both originated in the tropics, where succession is fast, there is no dormant season, and biomass regrows almost as quickly as you can cut it. A temperate winter changes the arithmetic.

The most useful temperate evidence is a German trial published in the journal Agriculture, which tested whether a species-rich agroforestry system based on Götsch's approach could work for renaturation of a former quarry in southwest Germany. The conclusion is encouraging with real caveats: the principles transfer, but biomass production is lower, establishment is slower, and you cannot follow a tropical species list or pruning calendar. Analog forestry travels better, because its reference model is whatever forest is native to your site. The Falls Brook Centre in New Brunswick, Canada has run analog forestry on a 200-acre site since the early 1990s, working from Acadian forest composition rather than a tropical template. Only the species list changes.

The failure mode when moving syntropic practice north is treating the pruning calendar as fixed. In the tropics you cut year-round into constant regrowth. In a temperate zone, a hard cut at the wrong point in dormancy sets a tree back a year instead of pushing it forward. Rebuild the timing around your own season, as you would with any food forest design borrowed from a warmer climate.

Walk the nearest patch of mature native woodland. Note the layers, the spacing, what grows in the gaps and what carpets the floor. That structure is your analogue target, and it is free.

For each native role, pick something you can eat or use. Where the wild wood has a nitrogen-fixing understorey shrub, plant a productive one. This move works in a 20 by 30 foot backyard.

Plant denser than final spacing, mixing fast pioneers with slow long-term trees. Cut the fast ones back hard as they crowd, and drop what you cut. You are trading labour for soil-building speed.

Most home gardeners end up between the two: analog forestry's structural thinking for the permanent layers, syntropic pruning discipline for the fast-growing filler. That hybrid is less a compromise than a recognition that a quarter-acre backyard is neither a restoration site nor a cocoa farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is analog forestry the same as a food forest?

No, though they overlap. A food forest is any layered perennial planting designed to produce food. Analog forestry adds a specific constraint: the planting must be structurally and functionally analogous to the native forest of that region, so species are chosen to fill ecological roles as well as to yield. Many food forests are designed purely around what the gardener wants to eat, which is a legitimate goal but not analog forestry.

Which system produces food faster?

Syntropic agriculture, by design. Short-cycle crops go into the same rows as the long-term trees from day one, so you harvest in the first season while the canopy is still years away. Analog forestry accepts a slower ramp because its target is the mature analogue structure. If early cash flow matters, that is the deciding difference.

Did Senanayake and Götsch influence each other?

There is no well-documented direct exchange between the two in the accessible literature. They worked in the same era on different continents against the same problem: degraded tropical land, failed monocultures, and whether restoration and production can share a hectare. It looks like parallel invention rather than shared lineage.

Can I do syntropic agriculture in a cold climate?

You can apply the principles. The German quarry study concluded that a Götsch-based system is transferable to the temperate zone, with lower biomass production, slower establishment and no possibility of following the tropical species and pruning calendar. Practitioners in Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic are running temperate versions. Expect to rebuild the timing around your own dormant season rather than copying a Bahia schedule.

Is there certification for either system?

Analog forestry has Forest Garden Products certification, developed by the International Analog Forestry Network with partners in Ecuador, Sri Lanka and Costa Rica as a low-cost standard for products from biodiverse forest gardens. Syntropic agriculture has no equivalent of its own; syntropic producers typically certify organic through conventional schemes.

Which one should I start with?

If you have a defined site and want a permanent, low-intervention system, start with analog forestry thinking and let your local woodland set the structure. If you want production quickly and do not mind regular cutting, borrow the syntropic approach to density and pruning. For most backyard growers the honest answer is analog structure with syntropic management, which is roughly where a careful site assessment lands anyway.
